What is Collateral Jazz? It started in Seattle back in 2002, but it actually started in the 1920s. Jazz hasn't always been played in symphony halls. It hasn't always been something for which people pursued higher educations. It has always been roots music - played in living rooms, basements, beer halls, coffee houses, community centers, lofts and wherever there is the will and the means. While study, practice and formality have been good for the music, it still lives on as the expressive, celebratory spontaneous music it started life as.

In addition to being home to several outstanding upscale music venues and some of the world's top jazz musicians, Seattle has a lesser known, but thriving, casual, underground jazz scene. This website, through private login, serves as a tool for the musicians to communicate, arrange jam sessions, hire each other for gigs, share tips on emerging venues and what-have-you. It also serves as the public face of our once obscure jazz scene; not the jazz at the center of things, the jazz you know about, but the jazz you've been missing…the Collateral Jazz.

Please keep an eye on the calendar, pictures and messages, support the music and people who are making jazz in Seattle because we love it. Come out and introduce yourself and you just may discover what we've known all along - that jazz is not stuffy, not pretentious. It is America's first unique art form and it belongs to all of us.

Welcome to the underground!
